How Skip Hire Works

Skip
Hiring a skip is often essential these days in order to safely and conveniently dispose of waste from building projects, or household and garden rubbish. The process can seem daunting, but there are really only a few factors to think about: the type and size of skip, where it will go and how you need to go about getting a skip licence. Of course, you may also think about factors such as reliability, cost and the firm’s reputation when you compare skip hire companies.

Firstly, you need to decide what sort of skip you need. There are three main types of skip available: traditional metal skips, enclosed skips and skip bags. The traditional kind is a simple metal box, whereas enclosed ones have a roof which can be locked to give more security. There are regulations about keeping waste from sticking out of the skip or blowing away, so an enclosed skip can be a good choice. If the amount of waste you have is small, you can also hire a skip bag, which is literally a very large, very strong bag. You fill it with rubbish, and it gets taken away – exactly like a skip. Skip bags are generally a cheaper option. When thinking about size, its best to over-estimate, as an over-filled skip is illegal to transport.

In placing your skip, the preference is for it to be on the road, parallel to the curb. They can also be placed on driveways and therefore over the pavement, but in either case you will need a skip licence before the skip is put in place. In some parts of the UK this has to be organised by the person hiring the skip, but in most places the skip hire company will sort things out for you.

Driving a Van for the First Time

Driving a van from Blenheim to Wellington

If it’s your first time driving a van, you may have some concerns about whether you can drive an unfamiliar vehicle safely. In fact, driving a van is very similar to driving a car. However, there are a few tips you can use to make your first van hire safe, simple and enjoyable.

The first thing to do when driving a van for the first time is to make sure you know its specifications. The height, width and weight of the van all have an effect on where you can drive it. For example, some vans may be too tall for parking garages. The weight of the van determines whether the normal speed limit applies to it or whether it is subject to special van speed limits. If you’re in doubt, just ask the van hire company about the specifications of the van you are hiring.

Mirrors are another important difference between most vans and cars. Unlike a car, a van usually does not have a central rear-view mirror; many also have no rear window. Instead, van wing mirrors are larger than those on cars. This means that you can position the wing mirrors to cover the sides and rear of the vehicle. Make sure you do this before setting out. You’ll need to check your wing mirrors frequently.

Parking in a large vehicle like a van can be challenging if you’re used to parking in a car. The extra size of the van, as well as the lack of mirrors, mean that you’ll need to use caution. Check your wing mirrors often; you may also find it helps to look backward out of the window. Take it slowly and don’t be afraid to get out and check distances.

Finally, remember that the increased size of a van compared to a car means that the vehicle has more inertia and therefore needs more room to stop. We’ve written more tips on driving a van here.

Track Days – What are They and How Can You Take Part

Honda S2000 Track Day, Laguna Seca
If you’ve ever wondered what it’s like to drive around some of the tracks you see on telly, you could use a track day to find out. A track day is a day when members of the public can take their car out on the track and find out its speed and handling capabilities in a safe and controlled environment.

Everyone from professional racing drivers to novices are welcome at track days, all you need is your car or bike and a valid driving license. You’ll learn how your car handles at high speed so you can be a better driver on the road and meet a group of like minded people.

When you book your track day you’ll have the opportunity to give your experience level. Even if you think you’re a good driver, pick the novice group. You may be quick, but you don’t understand the important safe driving rules associated with a track day. Start at the bottom and work your way up.

Your day will start around 7:30am. You’ll have your driving license checked and get the sticker for your group, go and have your vehicle inspected and noise tested, then head to the drivers briefing. The drivers briefing is usually about 15 or 20 minutes long, and you’ll learn about the flags, track etiquette and when each experience group will get to go out on the track.

Your day will be a lot smoother if you listen closely at the briefing. For safety’s sake, you should learn what the colored flags mean. If you’re a motor racing fan, you’ll recognize some of them – the yellow, blue, red and yellow and red striped flags all mean the same thing they do in a race.

Track days are a lot of fun and relatively cheap – you can often get a good track day for less than £100 – as well as being a great way to learn about your vehicle in a safe, supportive environment. Your car is safe from contact and you don’t have to worry about any pesky speed cameras!

Tips for Selecting a Wedding Band

Wedding bandChoosing the best wedding music is not always an easy decision. Wedding bands provide entertainment and live music for the big event.

Ask the band leader what is their specialty music. Make certain it fits with the style of music you want for the wedding. For example, a jazz band might not be a good choice if you like classical rock for the wedding. Request a demo CD to listen to some of the band’s music prior to booking them for the wedding.

Shop around and find the best price for this part of the entertainment. Ask the band leader if they provide discounts or special packages to select from when placing your reservation with them. Guests enjoy having a live band play.

Do not wait until the last minute to select and schedule the band. Often, bands fill their appointment schedules months in advance. Begin actively looking for the band as one of the first tasks for planning the wedding. You can always provide them with the wedding location and reception time as you get closer to the wedding day. Just make certain to reserve the group for your specific wedding date.

Discuss attire with the band leader. You want the band to dress appropriately to match the rest of your wedding. The group may not dress formal for playing. Talk to the leader and request the specific type of attire you need for your wedding.

Wedding bands provide great live entertainment. Be certain to find a band that plays your specific type of music, offers a good price, is available for your wedding date and will dress how you would like them to for your wedding. Planning ahead will make certain you can have the band of your choice on your wedding day.
